Phoenix

The phoenix is one of the rarest and most extraordinary creatures in Riftmoor, remarkable for being the only known species intentionally created by mortal hands. During the Great Siege of, an elven arkanist and lifelong falconer sought a new means of defeating enemy Wardens. After years of experimentation, he successfully fused trained falcons with refined Rift Crystals, Enchanting, and the Elements infused with Ignis arkana, creating living weapons capable of cloaking themselves in flame, striking with searing wings, and forming a powerful mental bond with their master.

Their greatest ability was the Soltact, a sacrificial detonation likened to the touch of the sun, powerful enough to kill even a Warden. After witnessing the first Soltacts, the elf discovered that each blast left behind a cool gemstone. Through further experimentation he learned these were eggs, and could only hatch in the heat of another soltact, proving he had unknowingly created an entirely new species rather than merely enchanting falcons.

His overseers saw his creation for what it was; a warden-killer. Ordered to expand his work into a weapons program, the elf instead fled with his research and remaining phoenixes. Cornered by pursuing Wardens, he commanded one final Soltact, destroying himself, his research, his captors, and every known record of the creation process. The surviving phoenixes escaped into the wild, where they established themselves as a natural species. Though generations of arkanists and Bioweavers have attempted to recreate them, none have succeeded, and the secret of their creation is believed lost forever. It has long proven easier to tame or befriend a wild phoenix than to create another.

Wild phoenixes mate for life and possess a unique life cycle. The female lays a single gemstone egg, while the male hatches it through his own Soltact, sacrificing himself in the process. The gemstone left behind contains the father, who later reunites with his lifelong mate after their offspring reaches maturity and hatches him along with their own young, beginning the cycle anew. Through this remarkable process, phoenixes continually renew themselves across generations and have never been observed to die of old age.

The gemstone fragments left behind by Soltacts and the feathers naturally shed by phoenixes retain a powerful affinity for Ignis arkana, making them among the rarest and most valuable magical materials in the world. However, a phoenix slain without performing a Soltact does not leave a gem and is lost forever.
