Haventide, one of the 8 Nations

Eleos, Kelek’s twin sister, believed compassion forged stronger bonds than fear ever could. A ruler who eased suffering would earn loyalty that no crown alone could command. A ruler must first understand those they govern, and quiet influence can reach further than armies. Empathy produced mercy and endurance, but caring for every wound risks despair— the burden of others' suffering and the conviction that pain can never truly be ended. The Dolphin, Pelican, and Stingray became home to the world's greatest healers, clerics, and caretakers.

For generations, the arts of healing had flourished quietly within the scholarly valleys of Fairbarrow. Physicians, herbalists, and clerics studied beside philosophers and musicians, their work respected but never distinct from the broader pursuit of knowledge.

The Great Siege changed everything.

The wounded arrived in numbers no city had ever imagined. Fields became hospitals, temples became infirmaries, and scholars laid down their books to preserve lives. In those years it became clear that healing demanded something different than scholarship alone. Knowledge could explain suffering, but only compassion could bear it.

When peace returned, the healers did not.

They had rebuilt along the southern coast, where ships could carry aid from every river’s outlet and to every shore. There they established Sanctuary, devoted not to learning for its own sake, but to the restoration of those broken by the world. The Hydro Wardens who oversaw the order, led by Eleos, recognized what had already become a reality and declared the Haventide a sovereign province of the Empire. Few objected. The separation had long since become a matter of administration rather than politics.

Though their roots remained in Fairbarrow, the Haventide soon became known throughout the world for its physicians, clerics, and hospices, believing that civilization is measured not by the wars it wins, but by how faithfully it restores those who survive them.

The Dolphin

The Dolphin embody compassion through healing. They believe every life preserved is a victory greater than any battlefield conquest, and so they have built the world's greatest tradition of medicine. Their healing sanctuaries stand beside rivers, lakes, canals, and sheltered harbors, where the wounded are welcomed with calm efficiency and unwavering kindness. Master clerics, physicians, and herbalists work alongside eager apprentices, transforming every patient into an opportunity to pass their knowledge to the next generation. Every injury is treated with dignity, every life with equal value, and every healer taught that compassion demands both extraordinary skill and endless patience. To the Dolphin, civilization is measured not by the strength of its armies, but by how faithfully it preserves every life entrusted to its care.

The Pelican

The Pelican believe compassion must travel if it is to change the world. They are explorers, navigators, settlers, merchants, sailors, and builders who carry the civilization of Haventide to distant shores through hope rather than conquest. Their great expeditions arrive bearing physicians before warriors, establishing welcoming ports where trade, medicine, diplomacy, and community can flourish together. Every voyage carries the foundations of a thriving settlement and the knowledge needed to transform an empty harbor into a prosperous home. Their magnificent fleets bind distant peoples together through reliable trade and enduring connection, extending Haventide's influence by becoming the neighbors every coast is grateful to welcome. To the Pelican, the greatest voyage is not the one that claims new lands, but the one that leaves every shore stronger than when they first arrived.

The Stingray

The Stingray believe the surest way to preserve life is to stand between it and danger. They are Haventide's disciplined marines, naval guardians, and Battle Clerics who carry compassion into the heart of war, shielding others so they may endure what would otherwise destroy them. Every company marches beneath the guidance of a Battle Cleric, whose sacred duty is not to lead the charge, but to preserve those who follow it. Their staffs raise wards against attacks while disciplined marines advance beneath their protection with spear and shield in hand. Great triremes carry them across the seas wherever innocent lives require defending, their orderly landings reflecting preparation rather than reckless aggression. Though formidable in battle, the Stingray seek neither conquest nor glory. They believe true strength lies in protecting others at great personal risk, measuring victory not by enemies slain, but by the lives safely brought home.
