Advanced Vacuum Infantry Suit
The AVIS (Advanced Vacuum Infantry Suit) is a fully integrated military armor system designed for infantry operations in zero-, low-, and variable-gravity environments. Combining a pressurized vacuum suit, powered exoskeleton, armor plating, maneuvering systems, magnetic stabilization, life support, sensors, and integrated tools, the AVIS allows soldiers to operate in environments where conventional infantry equipment is ineffective.
By the Fifth Age, the AVIS was widely regarded as the pinnacle of conventional infantry armor. Other armor systems remained in service, including lighter vacuum suits, atmospheric combat armor, and specialized military platforms, but the AVIS represented the highest level of protection and versatility generally available to an individual soldier.
Design
The AVIS was built around three fundamental requirements: mobility, stabilization, and sustainability.
Its powered exoskeleton compensates for the weight and bulk of the armor while assisting the wearer in handling heavy weapons and equipment. The suit's Maglock system provides electromagnetic attachment points throughout the boots, hands, knees, helmet, chest, and other key locations. Maglocks can be disabled, used for controlled gripping, or locked onto metallic surfaces with immense force, allowing soldiers to walk across spacecraft hulls or anchor themselves while firing.
Integrated maneuvering thrusters allow controlled movement through zero and low gravity. Positioned throughout the suit, these systems allow an operator to translate, rotate, stabilize, and counteract momentum. The AVIS does not provide conventional flight; instead, it gives the wearer precise control over movement in environments where gravity is negligible.
The suit's distributed cameras and sensors provide an expanded field of view, thermal and night vision, environmental monitoring, target identification, and other situational awareness capabilities. An integrated HUD presents critical information to the wearer, including suit integrity, oxygen, energy, propellant, weapons, navigation, and communications.
Power and Life Support
The AVIS requires enormous amounts of energy to operate its exoskeleton, sensors, maneuvering systems, defensive projectors, and life-support equipment. This is made possible through a compact Rift-Cell, which provides the high-density energy required to power the suit while remaining small enough for infantry use.
The suit's supply pack contains oxygen, propellant, energy storage, food reserves, environmental systems, and waste-processing equipment. A closed-loop waste upcycler can recover useful resources from organic waste, extending the soldier's operational endurance.
Integrated Equipment
The AVIS includes several built-in tools, most notably an electromagnetic grappler for traversing spacecraft and recovering from accidental separation. A compact Light-based laser tool provides cutting, welding, repair, and emergency breaching capabilities.
Its armor plating protects against environmental hazards, debris, shrapnel, and conventional weapons. Specialized armor packages can be configured for different elemental threats, though no conventional protection can completely defend against Pure Rift.
Fifth Age Service
During the return of the Wardens, AVIS-equipped security forces represented the finest conventional military technology available to the mortal races. The armor's mobility, protection, and advanced power systems allowed soldiers to survive and fight against enemies who would have annihilated ordinary infantry.
For a brief time, the AVIS appeared to bring mortals close to parity with the Wardens.
It did not.
Even the finest armor of the Fifth Age could only narrow the gap. AVIS-equipped forces could resist, coordinate, and occasionally wound the ancient beings, but the Wardens still tore through security forces with terrifying ease.
The AVIS was the best armor a mortal soldier could wear. Against the Wardens, it was simply the armor that let them survive long enough to fight back.
