FactionsNaja

Naja, one of the 8 Nations

Arzu, original head of the Bios domain and instigator of the rebellion, believed that if enough people chose him, the Throne would become inevitable. He pursued growth, influence, and the loyalty of mortals. His success led to his own exile, leaving diplomacy behind. Thereafter, Arzu accepted that only force could reclaim what had been denied. He believed growth was the highest calling. In its best form this inspired progress and aspiration. In its worst, an endless hunger for more and resentment toward those who possessed what one desired. The Cobra, Crocodile, and Owl became a people of resilient rangers, pioneers, and relentless builders of the future.

Though the Empire remained too strong to challenge openly, Arzu’s faction, called the Naja, never accepted peace. For centuries an undeclared war simmered along the imperial frontier. Rangers vanished into the forests, supply caravans disappeared without warning, and lonely watchtowers found themselves surrounded by enemies they could seldom see. Rarely did the Cobra seek decisive battles. Instead, they sought to exhaust, embarrass, and constantly test the Empire's claim to the throne. Every successful ambush whispered the same accusation: if you are truly worthy to rule, then prove it.

Life along the frontier became unlike anywhere else in the Empire. Logging camps, hunting villages, and isolated settlements lived beneath the constant shadow of the wilderness. Many frontier folk traded with both sides, married across old divisions, or quietly sympathized with Cobra ideals. It became difficult to tell where honest woodsmen ended and Naja rangers began. Imperial governors learned to distrust every guide, every forester, and every trail that disappeared beneath the trees.

The Empire answered in kind. Forts rose along every mountain pass and river crossing. Patrols became larger, roads more heavily guarded, and frontier garrisons remained permanently mobilized. They grew accustomed to a war that was never fully declared and never truly ended. No generation remembered peace between the Lion and the Cobra—only seasons when the fighting grew quieter.

The Cobra

The Cobra are the unseen hand of the Naja, embodying Arzu's belief that the clever may overcome the mighty. They are rangers, hunters, scouts, and guerrilla fighters who know every stream, ravine, and hidden trail winding through the frontier forests. Clad in practical leathers and woodland cloaks rather than gleaming armor, they vanish into the undergrowth long before an enemy realizes they were ever present. Imperial patrols learn to fear the stillness of the forest more than open battle, for arrows fall from unseen canopies, supply wagons disappear without a trace, and entire companies slowly dissolve beneath relentless harassment. The Cobra do not seek glorious victories or decisive engagements. Every skirmish exists to weaken the Empire's resolve, test its vigilance, and remind its rulers that the wilderness can never truly be conquered. They are the first children of Arzu's rebellion, carrying forward the cunning that began the Great Division itself.

The Crocodile

The Crocodile believe the wilderness itself should strike back. They are the hardy pioneers, foresters, and frontiersmen who carved lives from the untamed woods long before they became warriors. Broad shields, axes, spears, and practical armor suit them better than elegant formations, for they fight as the forest demands rather than as generals prefer. They wait patiently, hidden among ravines, riverbanks, and dense woodland until the perfect moment arrives, then surge from concealment with overwhelming ferocity before disappearing again into the wilds. The swift centaurs of the Second Shaping often ride beside them, their unmatched speed transforming carefully prepared ambushes into devastating charges that shatter enemy columns before they can form a defense. Towering awakened trees—ancient living guardians first raised by the Wardens to defend the frontier—also answer their call, their immense forms turning forests into fortresses that fight alongside those sworn to protect them. The Crocodile understand that they are not conventional soldiers, nor do they wish to be. They strike only when the ground itself favors them, leaving the enemy to wonder whether the forest had been watching all along.

The Owl

The Owl embody ascension through precision, believing the greatest victory is to build what the Empire can never even find. Deep within the oldest forests they have created one of the greatest civilizations in the world, a magnificent capital woven through colossal awakened trees whose tiered halls, spiral stairways, bridges, and gardens disappear entirely beneath an endless emerald canopy. Outsiders could march for years without finding it, while those who searched from the skies would see only unbroken forest. Here the Wood Elves form the heart of Naja society. Through centuries of shared life, they alone—beside the Wardens themselves—learned to commune with the awakened trees, speaking a living language the forests gradually came to answer. Their architects shape homes around trunks rather than against them, their strategists understand every hidden path through the wilderness, and their quiet stewardship keeps the great forest alive and vigilant. While the Cobra wage the hidden war and the Crocodile defend the frontier, the Owl ensure the Naja possess something worth fighting for: a civilization every bit the equal of the Empire's greatest capitals, hidden so perfectly that most never realize it exists.
