Azure Guard, one of the 8 Nations

Vord, Arzu’s second son, believed rulership was earned through unwavering vigilance; by becoming the guardian no threat could surprise. An empire survives only when every threat is anticipated and every weakness fortified. In its best form this created steadfast guardians and protectors. In its worst, an insatiable desire for security, territory, resources, and certainty and an inability to ever be satisfied. The Bear, Boar and Rhino became the symbols of a disciplined people of defenders, judges, and paladins, respected for their steadfast vigilance.

As the Empire stretched ever farther from its capital, it required more as well. Roads had to be carved through mountains, mines delved beneath the earth, and supplies carried across lands where no harvest could be trusted. Such duties were a natural fit to Vord and his following. His people came to prize diligence above glory and preparation above comfort.

They settled the mountainous northern frontiers, where harsh winters punished every lapse in judgment and only careful planning ensured survival. Dwarves, hardy men, and other resilient peoples worked side by side, mastering stone, steel, and industry until the frozen north became the Empire's great forge. There they built not only the finest weapons and armor, but the very industry upon which the Empire itself depended.

Though loyal to the Imperial Throne, the northern provinces gradually developed an identity of their own. Vord and the other wardens in his domain exercised broad autonomy, trusted to oversee the industries and defenses that few others possessed the discipline to maintain. Seasons of abundance were measured not by luxury, but by full granaries, stocked armories, and walls prepared long before danger appeared.

For generations, the Empire regarded the north as overly cautious. Yet when the Great Siege descended upon the world, it was the Azure Guard alone that stood fully prepared. While other provinces scrambled to gather armies, the Bear's fortresses were already manned, their forges already burning, and their supplies already laid in. The Empire endured because the north had spent centuries preparing for what everyone else believed would never come.

The Bear

The Bear embody vigilance through preparation. They believe the greatest victory is the one won long before an enemy ever appears. Across the mountains they carve immense vaults, granaries, reservoirs, and armories deep beneath the stone, constructing vast underground storehouses connected by hidden roads and fortified tunnels stretching between strongholds. Every harvest is carefully measured, every surplus preserved, and every fortress maintains years—sometimes decades—of supplies against siege. Nothing is wasted. Quartermasters, logisticians, engineers, and miners work together to ensure every settlement can stand alone should every road be cut. Their fortresses are masterpieces of layered defense, each wall backed by another, every gate overlooked by towers, every tunnel designed with deliberate choke points and hidden escape routes. Bear commanders wage war through patience, confident that while enemies exhaust themselves against the mountains, the Guard will remain warm, fed, armed, and unyielding. They are the quiet foundation upon which the entire Azure Guard endures.

The Boar

The Boar believe vigilance is earned through industry. They delve ever deeper beneath the mountains, pursuing iron, mithril, gemstones, and every resource that might strengthen the Guard. Their colossal mines feed endless forges where dwarven master smiths, engineers, and architects relentlessly improve every tool of war. No wall is ever considered perfect, no fortress complete, and no weapon beyond refinement. They design towering citadels, ingenious gatehouses, immense bridges, and sprawling underground cities whose halls are as beautiful as they are defensible. Every generation produces stronger armor, more powerful ballistae, longer-ranged crossbows, improved catapults, and increasingly elaborate siege engines. Even the great ankylosaurs of the Guard wear expertly forged barding and custom-built fighting platforms, allowing them to carry devastating dragon-killing ballistae into battle. To the Boar, civilization itself is a weapon patiently forged over centuries, and every stone they lay makes the mountains harder to conquer.

The Rhino

The Rhino are the living shield of the Azure Guard—the armies that stand where others would flee. They believe true vigilance demands an unbreakable line, and they devote their lives to becoming that immovable wall. Their ranks are composed of the realm's most resilient peoples: disciplined dwarven shield companies, stalwart human knights and crossbow regiments, and towering giants whose mere presence anchors entire battle lines. Elite paladins clad in nearly impenetrable armor serve as the backbone of every host, while disciplined formations of heavy crossbowmen darken the skies with bolts before the enemy can close. At their center march the famed ankylosaur cavalry, enormous living fortresses whose armored hides carry massive ballistae capable of bringing even dragons crashing from the heavens. Their thunderous clubs shatter cavalry charges and deter the mightiest beasts from drawing near. The Rhino do not pursue swift victories or glorious charges—they advance with relentless discipline, refusing to yield a single step. Against them, wars become contests of endurance that few enemies can hope to win.
